Branding our Character is important to survive in a competitive world.
Its sad how current actors try so hard being someone else or rushing to be like renowned Stars. The first thing a man needs is an own identity, patience, relevance, and capability to take criticism positively. This applies to all form of business or careers. 10 years back, If you asked the majority of population in any Indian populated country, among the new stars, 40% vote goes to Vijay, 40% for Ajith and remaining 20% would be others.
Take a look now, the percentage has dropped drastically and people have more sensible choice to pick from or favor. The similarity both the above mentioned Actors have is a branding issue. Not finding their own identity but rather being a lost fox in an open field, chasing everything and everywhere. If we realized, Rajini or Kamal took a long total 20years in being a directors actor, learning everything they can, being down to earth and finding their own identity in the market before establishing themselves to what they are now. Only then they participated with directors to give suggestions or opinions but even still believed its a directors job to output an actors talent and character in a movie. Its the other way around for these new “Actors”. Without even reaching the height they want directors to do wht they say and the outcome is, none of the renowned director wants to take them up or even bother giving them a script as it makes them feel those actors cannot deliver and way below par. For example Maniratnam only picks great actors and all Rajini, Kamal, Surya, Vikram even Madhavan got the chance but you know who missed out! Now recent news, Ram Gopal Varma a well known and respected & capable director of Bollywood has signed Surya & Vivek Obroi to play a lead in a true story which shake India couple of years back and appreciated Surya’s acting skills and capability in all area (great acting skills combined with outstanding figure/body).
Its sad Actors these days lack that. The best movie Vijay performed in was kathaleke Mariyathai & Thullatha Manamum Thullum even that compared with performance from new comers is only like 40% to a 80%performance, that’s real sad! Other hit movies were not performance based just normal commercial elements followed by so many failures such as Youth, Geethai, Badri, Kanukul Nillavu, Bhagavathi, Vaseegara & Tamizhan. Than one or two hits continued by rows of terrible movies yet again. If one recalls, both Rajini nor Kamal had a string of flops as many as some current Hero’s i mentioned. Actors should understand that flying in the air, spreading to five on screen, having punch dialogues in every scenes and just dancing with fancy clothes is not the idea of acting. This is not dance India dance, this a movie that keeps one seated 3hrs and it has to be appreciative and remembered and there is more to it for god sake.
Actors Like Surya, Karthi, Arya, Jay and many more young new comers are all being directors actors who are excelling so well in their career, being from nowhere to some of the most sort after hero and they are giving extraordinary performance in their movies. Who says only being superman, hulk or batman gets you recognition. Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Robert De’Niro, Al Pacino are all Superstars of Hollywood and we have our own Rajini, Kamal, Prakash raj or Nanapatekar. To be noted, all this names can deliver a powerful performance and did everything from character acting to comedy to sentimental to commercial etc. The most important thing, at least they have an own identity or style to follow. Face the fact that Simbu did the same mistake from the beginning of his career with row of flops and got booed from the public and became some sort of a laughing stock only recently he realized that it takes time and everything has to begin from scratch/foundation and now he is a directors actor who picks good stories and he too is rising much better now. Some could take him as an example.
